Protect yourself from Card Not Present scammers

Card Not Present fraud occurs when a transaction is completed without the physical presence of the card. Typically, scammers use stolen card information, including the card number, expiry date, and CVV number, to make unauthorised purchases or transactions online.

Phishing, smishing and vishing scams are the most common methods used to obtain your card details, as well as information like your PIN or One-Time Password (OTP). Once the scammer has access to these details, they can transfer funds out of your account, or make purchases without having your actual card in their possession. To prevent this type of fraud:

  • Never share account numbers, OTPs, PINs or passwords to authorise any form of transaction, and never save this information on your mobile devices.
  • Never open suspicious attachments or links, and never download files or forms requested in an email or SMS.
  • Only make online payments on secured websites (i.e. websites that start with https:// and have a lock icon).
  • Install up-to-date anti-virus software on all your devices.
  • Protect yourself by generating strong passwords on websites, apps, etc.
  • Enable 2 factor authentication (e.g. passwords requiring One Time PINs) wherever possible.
  • Register for MyUpdates to receive real-time SMS or email alerts for all transactions on your account/s.

Please remember that we will never ask you to click on links to update personal information like PINs, passwords or account details via an email or SMS, and we will never request this information over the phone.

If you suspect that your card details have been compromised, please contact your Relationship Manager or call WIonCall on 0861 001 052.
